To fulfill its mission of protect intellectual freedom, promote literacy, encourage lifelong learning, and provide
information services, the Union County Library provides access to the Internet.

User Responsibility
The Library does not monitor or control the content of the material accessed through the Internet and cannot be
held responsible for its contents. Not all information found on the Internet is accurate, complete, up-to-date, legal
or philosophically acceptable to all individuals. The Library assumes no responsibility and shall have no liability for
any direct, indirect or consequential damages arising from the use of information found on the Internet, or any
communications sent through the Library’s Internet terminals.

Access and Usage
You must have a current, valid library card with no overdue materials or fines to use the computers.
The Library does not provide email accounts to users; however, users with existing email accounts may access
their accounts through the Library’s Internet terminals. The Library assumes no responsibility and shall have no
liability for any claims or damages which result from the provision of such access to users.

As with other library materials, restriction of a child’s access to the Internet is the responsibility of the parent or
legal guardian. It is a violation of library policy for minors to give others private information about themselves or
others, including names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card and social security numbers; or to arrange face-
to-face meetings with people they have "met" on the computer network or Internet without a parent's permission.

Specifically, as required by the Children's Internet Protection Act, prevention of inappropriate network usage
includes: (a) unauthorized access, including so-called "hacking", and other unlawful activities; and (b) unauthorized
disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal identification information regarding minors.
Filtering software that is designed to restrict access by minors and other users to harmful materials has been
installed, covering specific categories deemed inappropriate.

Use of the Library’s terminals for the transmission, dissemination, and/or duplication of information is regulated
under various state and federal laws. The Library expects all users to comply with such laws.

Internet computers may only be used for legal and ethical purposes.  Examples of unacceptable use include, but
are not limited to, the following:
      •    viewing obscene material;
      •    destroying, damaging, or modifying equipment, software, or data belonging to the Library;
      •    introducing computer viruses;
      •    compromising the safety and security of minors when using e-mail, chat rooms and other forms of direct
           electric communications;
      •    using the workstation to make unauthorized entry to any other machine accessible via the Internet;
      •    using another person’s barcode number or permitting another person to use his or her barcode number to
           access the computer network and Internet.

Access to the Library’s computer network and Internet is a privilege, not a right.  Patrons found violating the Union
County Library Internet Use Policy or such rules and procedures established by the Library staff to ensure the fair
and reasonable use of Internet access will not be allowed to use the computers at the Library.
