The Union County Library System is committed to providing an attractive,
quiet, safe environment for all of its users and staff.

Children are welcome in each of our branches. The responsibility for the
safety and behavior of children in the library rests with the parent or
caregiver and not with the library staff. The Library is a public building.
Librarians are busy and are not able to supervise children.

Children up to age 8 must have a parent/caregiver in the immediate
vicinity and in visual contact with the child. The assigned caregiver must be
a responsible person of at least 13 years of age and must carry contact
information. The only exception is a child attending a library program
without a parent/caregiver in the meeting room. However, the
parent/caregiver is expected to remain in the library building and
immediately join the child at the end of the program.

If a child in this age group violates the Library Code of Conduct, the child
and the parent/caregiver will be informed of the rules. If inappropriate
behavior continues, the family may be asked to leave the library. The
Library reserves the right to include other behavior that is reasonably
deemed inappropriate.

Parent/caregivers using the public computers must stay in constant contact
with their children. Children under 8 cannot be left in the Children’s reading
area without a parent/caregiver. Children cannot be allowed to play on
undesignated computers and disrupt other library users. Parents may be
asked to leave the computer to tend to children.

Children age 8 and older may use the library on his/her own. However,
parents are still responsible for the actions of their child. Children using
inappropriate behavior may be asked to leave the library.

Closing time - Children should always be picked up before closing time.
This is a particular concern in inclement weather and after dark. All
children should have the telephone number of someone who can assist
them in an emergency. If transportation is not available at closing time, the
police will be called for assistance.
