It shall be the policy of this Board of Trustees, through the Union County Library System, to
provide free public library service to all residents of Union County, without discrimination
because of race, nationality, creed, or gender.
Administrative activities and technical processes for the entire system shall be carried out in the
main library, the Jennie Stephens Smith Library, in New Albany.
All materials of the Union County Library System shall be available to all users of the library
through any service outlet. Memorial and Honor books will be placed in the library specified by
the donor, but may be borrowed by any other service outlet.
When materials requested by the users of the library are not available through the resources of
the local library, requests shall be transferred to the main library. If they are not available there,
efforts shall be made to secure them through interlibrary loan.
Books and other materials shall be selected for values of interest, information, enlightenment
and literary quality. The collection will be constantly evaluated and unneeded/outdated materials
will be weeded.
The Union County Library System does not practice censorship and supports the American
Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights. In the event objections should arise to materials, the
patron making the complaint should complete the proper forms as indicated under
PROCEDURE FOR COMPLAINTS. The complaint will be reviewed by the Director and/or the
Library Board of Trustees, with written response to the patron.
